INNPACTO

No, no se trata de un error ortográfico, ni tipográfico, sino del nuevo “palabro” de moda en la actividad de I+D+i. INNPACTO es el programa que el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación está ultimando, y a través del cual vehiculará gran parte de las ayudas nacionales en esta materia. Sustituirá a varios de los programas vigentes hasta ahora y se cree que supondrá un cambio importante respecto a los actuales procedimientos. Poco sabemos del nuevo INNPACTO a estas alturas, salvo que se primará la cooperación entre empresas y centros tecnológicos y organismos públicos de investigación. Hasta el mes de abril no se publicarán más detalles. Así que a esperar… y desesperar. La escasa inversión privada en I+D+i nos obliga, a los que nos dedicamos a esta actividad, a cofinanciar nuestros gastos en las convocatorias públicas de ayudas, que, como se puede comprobar una vez más, están sujetas a una gran incertidumbre, pues, de forma más habitual de lo que sería deseable, se cambian las reglas de participación, los criterios de valoración, las prioridades temáticas, los plazos y formularios de solicitud. Desde 2000 hemos cambiado 4 veces de ministerio responsable pasando por MCyT, MEC, MITYC, MICINN, y por no sé cuántos distintos tipos de programas. Hoy en día aún hay más de 40 programas de ayuda al I+D+i, todos ellos diferentes. Este escenario de gran incertidumbre es muy negativo para una labor que, como el buen vino, requiere paciencia, tesón y plazos medios o largos para dar resultados. Además, todos estos cambios suponen un gran consumo de recursos humanos y económicos. Se puede resumir que en España (y en Europa más aún) se nos está yendo mucha pólvora en salvas. Estamos dedicando demasiado esfuerzo simplemente en cambiar de ventanilla a los funcionarios y provocando que los potenciales beneficiarios (empresas, centros tecnológicos y OPIs) dediquen su tiempo a estudiar los nuevos procedimientos, en lugar de consagrar sus esfuerzos y su talento a desarrollar nuevos productos o tecnologías que supongan realmente avances, mejoras de la calidad de vida y riqueza. Confiemos, pues, en que INNPACTO sea un buen empuje para adelante, y lo que es más importante, que el impulso que nos dé se mantenga en el tiempo y no venga dentro de poco otro programa, con otro nombre impactante que nos vuelva a hacer cambiar la dirección.

Innovation in processes

Innovation is understood as a new approach to products and processes, but most posts and marketing news tagged with “innovation” refer only to products, and mainly to minor changes on products. But as we have already mentioned in “Innovation Inside“, earlier in this blog, innovation in design, manufacturing and managerial processes are usually less expensive than product change, can be quickly implemented, and results come faster in the form of cost savings; needless to say that within the framework of our economic situation this is not a “maybe” but a “must”.   

I usually read about ten to twenty innovation articles a day and follow some blogs, but yesterday I found something that made me think about innovation in processes.  In fact, I thought what is “THE PROCESS“?   

The answer is simple: personal work. So  I got immediately overloaded with clear truths, as “a high % of product cost is hand labour”, “hand labour cost is lower there and there”, “great need in training and education”, and I’m sure anyone could add some twenty statements which lead us to the same conclusion: possibly the most important innovation field in our companies is just in front of our face, in the way each and every employee performs their tasks.

The inspiration for this post is  UK based company Archipod (company and product have the same name). The product is intended to be an “office in the garden” which allows you to work in an isolated, ecofriendly, nature looking environment, just outside home, so you avoid commuting, CO2 emissions, save a lot of time for your family, but still separating work from home life. 

 What is the percentage of people working in office buildings? How many of them could perfectly work almost at home? How many hours a week could they do this without  it having a negative effect on their company’s activity? To what extent would this  improvement in quality of life affect worker’s efficiency, productivity and morale to keep on working for the company? Will a move in this direction help increase birth rates in western countries?

LAUNCHING THE “NANOfutures” EUROPEAN INITIATIVE: THE EUROPEAN TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION AND INNOVATION PLATFORM (ETIP) IN NANOTECHNOLOGY

June 15-16^th 2010 

 Conference Center of Gijón – Asturias (SPAIN)  

 The European Commission, the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, the Government of Principality of Asturias, the NANOfutures  association and PRODINTEC are pleased to announce the Official Launching of the European Initiative “NANOfutures”: European Technology Integration and Innovation Platform (ETIP) in Nanotechnology. This event will be held in Gijón (Asturias) on the 15-16^th June 2010 (Please see attachment). This initiative has been included as Official Event under the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.  

Participants will have a unique opportunity to extend their knowledge on nanotechnologies, as well as get in contact with top-level European industrialists and world-class researchers in order to learn about nanotechnology, to exchange information, to find new applications for nanotechnology, to open new business opportunities and to increase their awareness on on-going R&D activities in the field.  

The event will comprise four main blocks:    A.       Official Launching of the European Initiative “NANOfutures”. High representatives from the European Commission and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation will explain the main objectives of this initiative 

B.       Nanotechnology: state of the art, challenges for innovation, and future potential markets for European companies. Top-level industrialists and world-class researchers from Europe will lecture on challenges to bring innovation to the nanotechnology field as well as will define how to overcome the current market barriers for full implementation of research activities 

C.      Technology Transfer Event: from research to market. A special session will be organized where researchers participating in state-of-the-art R&D projects at European and national level will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with industrialists and vice versa.  

D.      Financial investment in nanotechnology (start ups, venture capitalists, business angels, etc). A special session for financial investors, entrepreneurs, start-ups and spin-off managers, and researchers will be held.

MUNDO MARINO: UNA VISION DIFERENTE

Hoy, Viernes 25 de Septiembre a las 12:00 h, inauguramos la exposición “Mundo Marino: Una Visión Diferente” en el Acuario de Gijón. Esta iniciativa nace de la colaboración de dos entidades de Gijón, el Acuario y la Fundación Prodintec.

Esta exposición ofrece a todos los públicos una visión del mundo marino desde una nueva prespectiva, para dar a conocer cómo las innovaciones tecnológicas en el campo de la ingeniería de fabricación y diseño industrial, pueden ser aplicadas a la investigación y la conservación de este fascinante mundo. Además, ha sido avalada y financiada por la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la  Tecnología (FECYT) del Ministerio de Cienca e Innovación. Cabe destacar la calidad de la exposición y la rigurosidad en la elaboración de los contenidos combinado todo ello con un lenguaje divulgativo que sea entendible para todo el mundo.

Por lo que más nos toca a Prodintec, no me gustaría acabar este artículo sin resaltar lo que a mi personalmente me llena más de orgullo, el gran trabajo en equipo del personal de Prodintec. En esta idea ha participado todo el personal de la Fundación de una manera directa o indirecta y lo hemos hecho con una gran ilusión e incluso sacrificando nuestro tiempo libre para que no entorpeciese nuestro trabajo diario.

Así, el Departamento de Producción y de Diseño se ha volcado en la elaboración de los contenidos y la fabricación de prototipos utilizando las tecnologías disponibles en Prodintec y han puesto todo su conocimento en metodos de fabricación y  biomimetica. El Departamento de gestión de I+D, siempre atentos a la vigilancia tecnológica, ayudaron a encontrar la convocatoria más adecuada para la financiación y han proporcionado asesorimiento para la buena gestión del proyecto.  El  Departamento de Administración se ha movido para buscar patrocinadores y darle una difusión adecuada al evento a través de la WEB 2.0. Los compañeros de Sistemas siempre encontrandonos ordenadores de donde casi no los hay y “arreglandonos” el tema TIC. Incluso hemos hecho un video “making-off” donde hasta la música ha sido compuesta por un miembro de Prodintec (Dani Voces) que es un auténtico fenomeno!!

Por último, y aunque no es nuestro estilo resaltar a personas de forma  individual, creo que es justo reconocer especialmente la labor de MTT (Diego, Raquel y Paula) que, junto a Susana Acle y el resto del equipo del Acuario de Gijón, han sido los verdaderos impulsores y “cerebros” de la exposición.

Como se pueden imaginar, realizar un proyecto de este tipo no es una camino de rosas y, como suele pasar con la ejecución de buenas ideas, hemos tenido desencuentros, discusiones y diferentes puntos de vista que no son más que un reflejo que nos importa lo que hacemos. Sin embargo, nunca hemos bajado el nivel de exigencia y motivación porque creemos en lo que hacemos. En esto nos parecemos en algo a los recientes campeones de Europa de Baloncesto, muchos dudas y desencuentros al principio pero los objetivos y el equipo por encima de todo.

Así, al final, hemos conseguido conseguir nuestro objetivo, realizar una gran exposición que ha salido de la iniciativa y perserverancia de personas de la región y que desde este blog recomiendo a todas los ciudadanos de Asturias de todas las edades. No les defraudará!!!!

Light-Rolls: an innovative project that takes care of cost efficient production for light modules

 

The EC funded project Light-Rolls was started by kick-off meeting at 7^th of July 2009. The project focuses research and development of modular based production units for the seamless, high throughput manufacture of micro-structured, polymer based components and microsystems. The scientific objective aims to realize structures in the micron range and integrate also dies to be assembled in high-speed and parallel by benefit of self assembling. Nanoparticle dispersions used in fast conductive track printing technologies will allow the parallel generation of conductive lines.

These processes comprise the founding elements of the Light-Rolls technology platform with a roll-to-roll philosophy. The manufacturing modules will be integrable, exchangeable, with mechanical, fluidic and IT interfaces, to make it easy and cost efficient to adjust the sequence of process steps to the product to be produced. Besides the translation of processes for high-throughput manufacturing, high yield will be achieved by the application of advanced process control and production IT methods. Lines run without dangerous chemicals and use integrated recycling. For future products a Light-Rolls knowledge base for design for manufacturing will be elaborated. A pilot line will be set-up, tested for fabrication of flexible LED-display systems. Manufacture of other components like Lab-on-Chip or integration of new micro-energy storage components is possible in future to address needs of European industry.
