Hello Again. Today I’d like to share with you my own innovative ideas AGAINST the well stablished concept of INNOVATION. As we find in dictionaries and Thesaurus, INNOVATION is usually related with discovery, survey, research, exploring, creation, invention, and in general with “leaving home in pursuit of a new world beyond the known frontiers”. Poetic as it sounds, it reminds me of famous explorers (try this link for an alphabetically sorted list, is fantastic!!!) as Dr. Livingston and Stanley, Capt. James Cook, Amundsen, or Marco Polo. In this list you can also find Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin as an explorer of the Moon…We can also name brilliant scientific researchers and philosophers, but what do they all have in common?
They were trying to find the “Northwest passage“, and go where no other human being had ever gone and see what noone else had seen. Well, some of them found humans that had been living there for millenia, but they were not “civilized” so they did not count as “human”.
But I’m sorry I don’t think this attitude has anything to do with INNOVATION. Survey, research, creation, invention, discovery, etc. are related to the pursuit of knowledge for the only sake of knowledge in the best case (or even own glory or self satisfaction and pride) and also for the benefit of all humankind, and other altruistic objectives. I would call this “pioneering” attitude or, as it is called today, entrepreneurship
But that’s all. As such, knowledge is more or less barren.
What do INNOVATORS do? They are not so brave or intrepid (resolutely courageous; fearless; see synonyms at brave) as pioneers, or maybe their interests are not so altruist as theirs, but self-oriented. But INNOVATORS take other’s discoveries or inventions and convert them into money-making applications, which in turn brings an actual benefit for all mankind.
Winding up, I would say that if human sapience lies within the limits of a shapeless amoeba in the ocean of knowledge, pioneers stretch the surface and create thin long tentacles to reach and touch (just touch) new pieces of knowledge, whereas INNOVATORS go after them inside the new tentacles, break the surface, pick the new knowledge and bring it into the amoeba to make it grow, for their own profit and for the rest of us.
